Default Raffles hotel in Singapore

I'm going to Singapore soon (been there once before and loved it) and
was wondering about the legendary Raffles hotel.
What's the deal about this hotel: why is it so famous?

I've heard that one of the "must do" type of things while in Singapore
is to go visit the hotel (apparently even if you don't stay there) and
take a drink called "the Singapore sling". What is it, and is it
expensive?
Is the hotel's bar open to the public?

Because the hotel has a long history and been visited by many famous people
who wrote about it. The same reason why there are famous bars in Spain,
Italy and Cuba frequented by Hemingway. Or famous hotels in the US where
President Lincoln slept.

Singapore sling is a drink invented at this hotel. It has a famous bar call
the Long Bar. Having a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar is the thing to do
in this hotel.

Singapore Sling:

2 oz. Gin
1 oz. Cherry Brandy
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
Club Soda
1 barspoon Powdered Sugar

Mix gin, brandy, and lemon juice with a splash of soda or water in a shaker
with ice into a 12 oz. collins glass. Add ice cubes, fill with club
soda.Stir gently and garnish with lemon slice and mint sprig.
