Does anyone have first hand information on crossing the border from
near LANNEMEZAN (65330) and local traffic on the Spainsh side with
a view to making it by train to Madrid. ?Jaca ? CanFranc ? Any
help welcome. Mid August.

I once went up the valley of the ASPE past Bedous and Accous and arrived
at Etsaut. Just up the road/valley from Etsaut is where the GR10 "Pyrenees
walk " crosses and going south east towards the Mediterranean there is a
fantastic path cut out of the cliff face called Chemin de la Mature.
Wonderful history and an interesting walk.
Further up the valley is the summit and the Col du Somport.
Below is the tunnel linking France with Spain that has not been in use
since an accident in 1970. The wonderful CANFRANC station was going to be
an International border station but is now in a bit of a sorry state.
Apparently there is a bus linking Oloron with Canfranc so the rail
passengers can actually make this crossing but without the use of the
tunnel.http://www.canfranc.com/accesos.htm
This is an interesting site :http://www.canfranc.de/starte.htm

For trains from Canfranc to Zaragoza look up www.renfe.es

It appears that the old railway tunnel has now been opened for road use and
so links France and Spain at this point. Presumably there are now more
regular means of getting through by public transport.
