Default Great wall of China, from Hong Kong -how?

Hi

My wife and I went to China in March this year nad we went to Beijing, Xi'an
and Hong Kong. We found out that China is a pretty big country because the
train from Beijing to Xi'an took about 12 hours and the flight from Xi'an to
Hong Kong took about 2 hours. But you can of course go from Hong Kong to
Beijing to see the wall but I think that you would have to use a couple of
days to do this. And the tickets from HK to Beijing are not that cheap. We
went to see the Great Wall at Simatai and it was amazing by the way. It was
in March, the weather was beautiful and there were still a bit of snow left
on the wall. And there were almost no one there because it was so early in
the season :-) I have posted pictures and a long trip report from our trip
to China on my homepage www.gardkarlsen.com. Maybe you can find some useful
information there :-)

I'll be visiting Hong Kong, and I was wondering about taking a short
trip over to mainland China, mainly only to see (and walk a bit around)
the great wall of China.

If I don't have money to burn, how do I get there (and back), and is it
a short or long trip? In case it'll take more than a day's trip, are
there cheap backpacker places there where I could stay the night?
