I heard cats were eaten instead of rabbits during WWII here in northern
Italy.

Could be that they are still popular in Veneto, at least there is a
dialectal proverb which says "padovani gran dotori, veneziani gran
signori, vicentini magnagati, veronesi tuti mati" i.e. "inhabitants of
Padue are great doctors, those of Venice are great lords, those of
Vicenza are cat eaters, and those of Verona are all crazy"
