I have seen a few airplanes that were painted white with "Star Alliance"
on the fuselage and the Star Alliance logo on the tail. There was no
other airline identification painted on the airplanes. Who actually
operates these airplanes?

I saw a few of these at CPH and it took quite a few seconds for me
to scan the entire plane to see that a small SAS (or Scandinavian, I
cannot remember which was there) designation was present as well.
