Racism probably has something to do with it. EU members are opposed to
Turkey joining, with Hungary, UK, and the Iberian peninsula being more
supportive- Hungary is the only one that edges over 50% support. That
could likely change in the next few years though, in Turkey's favour.
The real sticking points may not even be Cyprus- Austria supports the
entry of Turkey even _less_ than Cyprus (10% as opposed to 15%) and
they've promised to put it to a national referendum. France and Germany
support the entry of Turkey even less than Greece!


If there was a referendum in UK, I doubt if a majority would support UK
being in the EU, never mind anybody else joining the EU.


Well, the anti-EU people would have to do a big job of convincing the
'don't knows'. Recent polls show that 33% think the EU is a 'good
thing'- 25% a 'bad thing.' Most people
