Your friend, like you are, is a financial illiterate, AliASS.

Hospital bills are not collateralized . Therefore, no assets would be
at risk for non payment.

If the hospital bills were simply ignored and not paid, the worst
that could happen to your friend is his mother's credit could be
affected negatively .

And even there some hospitals don;t even bother to report non payments
to credit bureaus due to the large volume of uncollectibles
and the clerical effort involved in reporting them
