I'll be approaching from the Williamsburg area on SR 5. I want to go through
Petersburg first, then Richmond.

You can't do that, at least not directly. SR 5 is on the north side
of the James and Petersburg is on the south side. Stay on SR 5 long
enough and you'll be on Main Street in downtown Richmond.

I'll take interstates if I must but I prefer
to take state routes. Is there any reason not to take U.S. 1 through Petersburg
up to Richmond?

Before leaving the Williamsburg area you may want to visit Jamestown.
I prefer Jamestown to CW -- Jamestown is a little more historical and
a little less touristy.

Highway 1 is not your scenic little backroad, to put it mildly.
There's no reason to take it rather than I95 unless you want to go
more slowly and get stuck in traffic.

I'm hoping some friendly folks from the area, or experienced travelers, might
have some tips or advice, suggestions or advisories?
