It would depend on where you're going to be. There are
some English (well, Romanized) road signs on the major
highways and especially around and within the major
metropolitan areas, such as Osaka or Tokyo - but on the
other hand, if you're going to be in those places, it's insane
to try to drive. The traffic and parking situations will be
horrible, and the train/subway/bus systems wind up being
a much better way to get around.
