Well, I re-suggest Latvia, then. If you get out of Riga, folks speak

mostly
Russian, but they are very open to foreigners who speak English (even
funny-sounding English), and you can find a cabin in some small town on

the
Lielupe or Daugava river for about $50 a month. The locals eat off the
economy for about $100 a month, and the women there are a thing to

behold.
It might even distract you from your task. Excellent connectivity,
dependable power, emergent economy...it might suit the bill.

People in Latvia are nice, I'll agree... but throw in ghastly weather and
some of the planet's worst food.

Hmm, weather and food are in the eye of the beholder. The weather is worse
in Seattle, IMHO. However, if you like potatoes, grease and fried mystery
meat, the food isn't all that bad. :-)

I did as much of my own cooking as possible, and ate quite well. Excellent
smoked meats, diverse cheeses, great wines, caviar, salmon and
seafood......yum. Its the local Russian/Latvian cuisine that is so bad.
