Police: Flight attendant stole identity to land job
By James H. Burnett III

An American Eagle Airlines flight attendant was being held in Miami-Dade
County’s Pre-trial Detention Center Saturday afternoon, facing
accusations that he landed his traveling gig by using another man’s name
and fake IDs.

Jophan Porter, 38, whose last known address was a basement apartment in
the Bronx, N.Y., was hired earlier this year by American Eagle, a sister
carrier of American Airlines, as a flight attendant, even though he
applied for the job as Anthony Frair, a 40-year-old Bronx resident who
swears he never met or heard of Porter.

The deception came to light several days ago when Frair, a man with a
criminal rap sheet in Florida, attempted to apply for food stamps in New
York. He was rejected because records showed he was gainfully employed
by the airline.

Porter, an immigrant from Guyana who was based out of Miami
International Airport, was arrested on Friday when he returned to MIA
from a personal trip to London. Charges include six counts of possessing
false government IDs, three counts of forgery and three counts of
possessing stolen driver’s licenses -- all three from Florida and each
one in Frair’s name.

Porter was being detained on an immigration hold, Ivan Ortiz-Delgado, a
spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Saturday.

The agency intends to deport him once his legal case plays out,
Ortiz-Delgado added.

Efforts to reach Frair on his cell phone Saturday were unsuccessful. A
woman at a Pasco County, Florida, apartment complex listed as a recent
address of Frair’s, said “I know him, but not well. He really just keeps
to himself.” Investigators say Frair has been adamant that he does not
know Porter.

And the only known connection between the two men is that their former
addresses in the Bronx were just blocks apart.

It was not known how Porter slipped through the multi-layered system of
federal security checks instituted for airline employees following the
9/11 terror attacks.

Nor was it known how he was able to get hired at American Eagle using
the identity of a man with an arrest record.

Frair was arrested four times in Largo, in Pinellas County, between
January and October 2008 on charges of criminal mischief, domestic
battery, witness tampering and battery with a deadly weapon.

American Eagle Airlines issued this statement about the case, without
mentioning either man’s name:

“American Eagle Airlines can confirm that an American Eagle flight
attendant has been arrested on charges involving identity theft that
does not involve a customer. American Eagle is actively involved in the
investigation with law enforcement authorities, including the FBI.
Further information on this case should come from law enforcement
authorities who are handling the investigation.”

A spokesman for the FBI’s Miami field office deferred to Miami-Dade
Police on Saturday. But beyond confirming that an investigation was
under way, Acting Maj. Nancy Perez, chief spokesperson for Miami-Dade
Police, declined to comment , saying Saturday that the investigation was
“too fresh,” and “just getting on.”
