Default Driving in Alaska in March

I'm flying into Anchorage in early March and will spend 10 days photographing,
first bald eagles on the Kenai near Homer, then if the weather is clear up
north near Fairbanks for northern lights.

I'll rent a vehicle ... do I need 4 WD or will I be OK (most years) with your
basic front wheel drive w/ snow tires model? Do I need chains? I don't have
to be anywhere specific at any given time except back in ANC for the return
flight so I can wait a day or two for roads to clear if there's a storm.

Whadda ya think?

Bill

You should be flying up here and drive to Brackendale just outside Squamish (on
the road to Whistler BC Canada) now as its the wintering ground for the Bald
Eagle..they just did a count there and it came up as just under 4000!
