Hotel in Mantova and vineyards in northern Italy
Hi all,
I'll be driving through northern Italy in a few weeks and was planning a stop-off in Mantova. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel there? Additionally, we'd like to take a tour of a vineyard (or two) - which in this region are worth visiting? Thanks in advance. |

Wine in Mantova district
DOC Wines produced in the region of Mantova: Garda, Colli Mantovani and Lambrusco Doc A lot of white type of grapes are grown in this region: Garganega, white pinot, gray pinot, chardonnay, italian tocai riesling, riesling, sauvignon and cortese. A lot of red grapes too: red cabernet, cabernet franc and sauvignon, merlot, black pinot, marzemino, corvina and barbera. The wine district around Mantova is called "Colli Mantovani" and produces DOC wines. The wine producers are present in these small cities: Castiglione delle Stiviere, Cavriana, Monzambano, Ponti sul Mincio, Solferino and Volta Mantovana. Much more typical is the DOC Lambrusco (red wine, sometimes sparkling and sometimes sweet). Lambrusco around Mantova is produced in the southern part of Mantova's region. The Lambrusco quality produced here is called "viadanese". In the region of the "Parco del Mincio" you will find red and white wines with the quality label "Doc Igt" produced around the hills of lake Garda. Here the wine producers reccomended by "Small food", the association that protects the "original and biological (organic) local production" - Colombara di Cesare e Franco Gozzi Monzambano (Mn) Via Ortaglia, 16 Tel. 0376 800965 Production: Garda Chardonnay Doc 2000, Garda Chardonnay Riserva 2000, Garda Cabernet Sauvignon Doc 2000, Rosso Saline 1998. - Dondino di Sergio e Corrado Cattani Cavriana (Mn) Località Dondino Strada Cavallara, 2 Tel. 0376 82231 Production: Pinot Grigio (gray) Alto Mincio 1999, Garda Merlot 2000. - La Prendina di Giulietto Piona Produzione eccellenteMonzambano (Mn) Strada San Pietro, 86 Tel. 0376 809450 Production: Falcone 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Garda Doc, Fajal Merlot 1999, Garda Merlot Doc 1998, Valbruna Sauvignon Garda Doc 2000, Pinot Grigio (gray) Garda Doc 2000, Merlot Rondinella 2000, Pinot Bianco (white) 2000, Chiaretto 2000, Riesling Paroni 2000. - Reale Volta Mantovana (Mn) Località Reale Strada Volta Monzambano, 34 Tel. 0376 83409 Bianco Garda Colli Mantovani Doc 2000, Rosso (red) del Ciano, Pinot Nero (Black) Alto Mincio Igt 1999. - Ricchi dei Fratelli Claudio e Giancarlo Stefanoni Monzambano (Mn) Località Ricchi Strada Festoni, 13 d Tel. 0376 800238 Production: Garda Chardonnay Meridiano 2000, Garda Colli Mantovani Bianco 2000, Garda Chardonnay Brioso 2000, Garda Chardonnay 2000, Colli Mantovani Rosso (red) 2000, Garda Merlot 2000, Garda Cabernet Ribò 1999, Garda Cabernet 2000, Le Cime passito Alto Mincio Bianco (white) Igt 1999, Spumante Ricchi Garda Chardonnay Doc, Armonia Spumante Dolce. - Cantine Virgili Mantova Via M. In oups.com,
honosutomo typed: I'll be driving through northern Italy in a few weeks and was planning a stop-off in Mantova. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel there? Several years ago, we stayed at the Hotel Broletto, Via Accademia, 1. It was very convenient, just off the main piazza. It was moderately priced, clean, and comfortable, but not luxurious. I'd go back again. -- Ken Blake Please reply to the newsgroup |

"honosutomo" wrote in message oups.com... Wow! Thanks for such a comprehensive reply, much appreciated! Maybe a bit of a stretch but if I were you I would travel 3 hours west to the Piemonte (Piedmont) area and have some of that famous Barolo and Barbaresco wines; best red wines that Northern Italy has to offer, or Italy, period. |
