... as far as U.S. prepaid plans are concerned I like www.tracfone.com (I
have several Tracfones) - their phones will roam onto other networks that
use the same technology.

Right, Tracfone is just right for your purpose.

For $29 plus shipping you can get a Tracfone with 120 minutes and 2 months
service.

You can get an additional 100 free minutes if you send an email to
saying "Free Minutes Please."
You will then receive an email from the Tracfone company with instructions
for activating your new phone and receiving the extra 100 free minutes.

Hi, I bought a nokia 3310 (GSM) in Italy
#2 (If it does work in the US) can anyone recommend any cost-effective
prepaid services?

If you don't want to buy another phone because yours is incompatible with
the US
consider a portable prepaid service such as
the prepaid Tel3Advantage service
you can call from any phone in the USA for a flat fee of 2.9 cents a minute
with no other charges
(there may be a FCC mandated charge from some public phones of 69 cents but
not private phones)
you can set up speed dial numbers and manage the account online

Tourists to the U.S. often leave the metro area where Sprint has good
service. If Virgin let you roam onto other CDMA and AMPS networks (as
post-paid Sprint allows), then they'd be fine.

You can drive five minutes out of SF or Silicon Valley, and have no GSM
or Sprint CDMA coverage.
