I wonder if other airlines will follow. Delta and Continental didn't
follow AA with a charge for the first piece of checked luggage.

I don't know about Delta, but Continental doesn't seem to be in serious
trouble at the moment. CO is still serving meals in coach, and I would
think they would eliminate the meals first, if they had to crunch the
numbers.
