Hi list, me and my wife of 42 years would appreciate some recommendations, in the Caribbean, for people that are no longer extremely active. I am 72 and my wife is 67, but we are both still reasonably active (agile). I still ride my mountain bike about a mile every other day- -so our mobility is not extremely limited- -but, we are no longer interested in diving, water sports, rough terrain hiking and etc. We enjoy the beach, local people and cuisine, as well as the beauty of nature- -and to some extent, we enjoy other tourist(if not in great numbers). When we travel to the Caribbean by air we seldom stay on the hotel strip, but on the local economy if it is safe. We have been to: Cancun, Playa Del Carmen,Cozumel,Caymen Isles, Puerto Rico, St Thomas,Dominica, Barbados, Aruba, Costa Rico, Beliz, Panama , Jamaica and several towns in Mexico. I guess what we are looking for is just not out there. Please understand we enjoyed our trips to many of these places, ie We fly to Cozumel every Feb for Carnival (we love the children's parade). The Utopia we are looking for, I guess, is a place that is laid back, reasonably priced, good food, safe and friendly people, with a limited number of tourist. We have been looking at Anguilla, any comments, good or bad, and what is the best way to get there.(From central US).DFW,LIT,MEM TUL Any recommendations on other places would be appreciated. Thanks and have a good day Rogerx |

With out a doubty, Dominica is one of the most remarkable places we have visited. It's mountains and lush vegitation are unsurpassed, and yes, the people were friendly and accommodating. If there were any negatives ,it was, on the side of the islands we were on, the beaches were either nonexistent or rocky. Please don't misunderstand me, this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The other negative is the getting there(and back). Air will cost you twice what you will spend while in country Thank you for your post, I am now starting my research on Tobago- - -Rogerx |

Self-catering for the self-sufficient. There's only 7 rental units on the property. It is owned and operated by Marjorie McClain who lives on the premises. Her son, Christian runs a small restaurant on the property. VERY NICE and FRIENDLY people. It is off and away from the gawd forsaken all-inclusive compounds. It is just a short walk to the ferryboat docks -- where you can take a day trip on your own over to St. Martin -- if that interests you. We fly from Colorado (loooooooooong trip.) So, our options are pretty much just American Airlines -- flying into AXA (The Valley) and arriving around 10-11 P.M. at night. Alternately, you could fly in (and out of) SXM (Sint Maarten) -- taking a taxi to the Marigot ferry docks on the Saint Martin side -- and taking the ferry almost directly to The Ferryboat Inn. :-) The cab and ferry trip should run less than an hour, and the ferries run every half-hour. My wife and I discovered Anguilla and the Ferryboat Inn about 8 years ago, and we have made annual visits of 3 weeks-at-a-time every year since. We always go in off season - Sept, Oct, early Nov. Off season gives you the ability to interact with folks -- you don't have to compete with the masses of Let's-Hurry-Up-And-Have-A-Good-Time tourists. We've made a number of friends there over the years. But, if you want a mint on your pillow every night, this ain't for you. Thanks and have a good day Rogerx In the Summer time, Ocean Grove on the NJ Shore. It was founded as a religious retreat in the 1800's. Until I think 1960's the city gates were closed to automotive traffic. The original founders still set up their tent houses. Sunday is still a quiet day for reflection. If you wish to buy alcohol you must do so in a neighboring town. I enjoy riding my bike on the boardwalk in the early morning hours, or in amongst the guest houses and on some paths between. The architecture reflects the period when the town was founded. That is to say there are some fine Victorian homes and guest houses that take you back to a quieter time. In addition to the ocean beach, the center piece in town is the Great Auditorium, a Victorian Gothic frame structure. When it is not used for services, the Great Auditorium hosts many cultural events from plays to concerts. The town slipped into a bit of decline in the 1960s through 1970s but came out of it's slump in the 1990s. Now Ocean Grove has several art galleries, restaurants featuring everything from simple fare to haute cuisine. August is best for the NJ Shore. If this doesn't suit your schedule, you have been to Playa del Carmen - what about Isla Mujeres or Tulum? Isla is Cozumel without the over development or onslaught by cruise ships. Tulum beach while undergoing development still offers vacation rentals nestled between sand dunes and moderatly priced cabañas. -- ________ To email me, Edit "blog" from my email address. Brian M.
