Asheville-Gatlinburg April 1-4

Hi All,
Would love to hear comments & suggestions on accomodations &
sightseeing (by car) for two days each in Asheville & Gatlinburg and
then up to Lexington to visit relatives. We prefer B&B's but can't
decide on which ones because on-line or on paper they all look good!
My wife loves arts & crafts and I love b-b-q & honky-tonk, so looks
like we'll find plenty to do during the day, but where to sleep??
We've never been to the area, so we've got the usual suspects on our
list, sublime to rediculous, Biltmore to Dollywood (built more?)
All thoughts welcome.

Gatlinburg is extremely tacky. It is the bad taste capital of the
Midwest. Dont spend even one moment on the redneck-infested sidewalks of
that awful town. Just find a hotel there to sleep and go hike in the
Smoky Mountain National Park which begins just outside town.

We're planning a trip to that area in September, and will be staying at
the Richmont Inn in Townsend, TN;

heard, Townsend is marginally less tacky than Gatlinburg. We plan to
stay away from Gatlinburg at all costs!

Haven't been to the Richmont Inn yet, but it looks passable.

than being a redneck, elitist comes to mind. Ya gotta have a sense of
humor when you travel and explore what's 'out there' for yourself.
Can't get much more tacky than Las Vegas, but you still have to do it
(at least) once.

Gatlinburg may be tacky, but there are some pretty serious craft shops
there, once you navigate the t-shirt shops. If you want to see tacky+ , go
down the road to Pigeon Forge. Indoor skydiving, and that sort of thing.
Dollywood! (never been to Vegas, so I'll withhold comment). But, if you've
got any shoppers among you, PF also has a huge supply of outlet malls, its
only redeeming feature.

If you go into the park via Gatlinburg on US 441, you'll soon run into
Sugarlands Visitor Center. Stop there for a map and a quick overview of
native plants.

I suppose because it is west of the mountains.

It is South of Cleveland Ohio which is certainly Midwest. South would
be more traditional but perhaps the Unionists in Eastern Tenn. are
objecting.
