"supermarket restaurant"...???

New concept to me... do you mean like the three plastic booths that sit
near the Super-K-Mart 'deli' counter here in the US, or something less
hard scrabble in England?

my local supermarket has a self service restaurant doing curry,
sandwiches, pies and maybe pasta. Quite pleasant.

Ah, but my local supermarket does *not* have Wall Mart ambience
:-)

rather expensive, and not very good, these days imho.

I am looking for advice on how to eat inexpensively in England

pubs, indian restaurants, and fish'n'chip shops and kebab shops (both of
which also usually sell a range of chicken and veggie finger foods,
burgers etc.) are likely to be the best bets, along with university
cafeterias (which usually don't require you to be a member of the
university).

most cities with large student populations also have
pizza/burger/veggie-oriented joints where the emphasis is usually on
quantity rather than quality, but at worst they're indifferent, rarely out
and out bad.

chinese is generally a fairly expensive option except in cities like
london, manchester and birmingham with established chinatowns.

there is really no substitute for local recommendations, and indeed if
you're on a budget they are probably more useful than food-guide
suggestions.

for example, the pubs that get in the food guides are generally those
selling fairly elaborate restaurant-style dishes -- often very good, but
not especially cheap. by contrast, at my local pub (for example) you could
get a big bowl of soup, a hefty sandwich and a bowl of fries, all
genuinely freshly made, for about five pounds -- enough for the day's main
meal. places like this abound, but if they aren't marketing themselves
specifically as foodie pubs, the chances are they won't advertise or
appear in the gastronomic guides.

in general, you can save money when eating out by sticking to main courses
-- starters, desserts and side dishes all add disproportionately to the
cost of a meal, as do drinks, particularly alcohol -- it's -far- cheaper
to drink in a pub than in a restaurant. not everywhere will serve tap
water for free, but many places will and it never hurts to ask.

as a rule of thumb you can assume that anything you have to ask for
specifically -- with obvious exceptions like salt! -- will be charged for,
and then you are more likely to be pleasantly surprised than shocked by
the bill.

someone else has already recommended the knowhere guide, i think --
www.knowhere.co.uk -- and i'll second that. rough guides food
recommendations also tend to be good -- www.roughguides.com -- and you
could try asking in some of the relevant newsgroups in the uk.local
hierarchy.

London is filled with marvelous restaurants with amazing variety, it won't be hard for you to find a good restaurant by using smart search engines of restaurants: Ex: http://restaau.co.uk
It can help you to filter search results easily by different aspects such as Cuisines, Distance, Price, Dinning Options, Good For, Star…View details of a restaurant with telephone, location, photos, description and reviews from internet community about that restaurant.
