http://www.sahara-overland.com/routes/

Chris Scott's book (Sahara Overland) is a very good introduction to long
range desert travel, and the web site keeps the book up to date.

If you need more detailed information, the best source bar none is Klaus
Daerr's "Durch Afrika". No other book comes even close to describing that
many roads in that much detail.

The old edition was just one big book :
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASI...882482-3428859

It now comes in two parts :
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASI...882482-3428859
http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASI...882482-3428859

Klaus Daerr is just the motivation I needed to read German more often...

check out the site at http://www.sahara-overland.com/routes/index.htm
The guy who maintains the site has a book that will help you out.
