Maybe we should say Viking Virgins. Anyway, it will be our first
venture with this group. I am looking forward to it, but first, let's do the Alaska cruise in May.. Ermalee ----wanting to meet Doris Tobie Gerbrandt wrote: "Virgin Viking!" "Cruise Crazy" wrote in message ... Jean asked:" did you post a review on that one? I'd love to hear about it as so few post about their voyages in that region. Did you have to get a yellow fever shot? I've heard that one has to when going to Brazil. ---" No review. Yes we needed shots, pills for malaria and a visa. The whole pre cruise procedure was an ordeal because we had a problem getting the shots. We had to drive 50 miles each way to a public health clinic in a bad neighborhood only to be told we needed a prescription from the doctor. He was able to fax it to them so we avoided the double trip. It was the trip of a lifetime and I would do it again if it wasn't for the health hassle. The visas were expensive. Brian Ford was the lecturer onboard and he was terrific. He will not be on next years cruise. ~~DORIS~~ I'll bet it was the trip of a lifetime and I envy you! I am not allowed to take live vaccines of any kind, so that was the reason for the yellow fever vaccine question. See you on the Viking cruise! --Jean |

I hope Oceania realizes that I had such "influence" on your taking the Regatta to the Amazon! ;-D Seriously, did you post a review on that one? I'd love to hear about it as so few post about their voyages in that region. Did you have to get a yellow fever shot? I've heard that one has to when going to Brazil. I did a business trip to Sao Paulo Brazil a few years ago and didn't need yellow feaver shots. Though maybe ships that go to the Amazon require it. --Tom I needed one a few years ago since I was going to Manauas and the Upper Amazon river. No place else. One reason to get a YF vaccination is that the next country you visit may require it because you have just visited a country with YF. For example, you might not need a vaccination to visit Brazil, and you might not need a vaccination to visit Costa Rica, but if you go from Brazil to Costa Rica you might need a vaccination. My impression (from what I've read of travelers' reports) is that to some extent it depends on the whim of the border guards. I've traveled enough to dislike the idea of relying on the whim of border guards. And if I'm going to have an adverse reaction I'd rather have it at home two blocks from a hospital than in a foreign country. So I've gotten the vaccinations that are required or suggested for the places I *might* visit in the next few years. Some people are afraid of shots, and I understand that they might not want to get a shot they aren't absolutely required to have. But *to me*, that's not the best policy. But then, my health plan covers travel vaccinations with a $0 copay. If you are paying out of pocket it can add up. Jack, That's why I am afraid to go to Africa and Brazil...I have never been afraid of shots, and have mine pretty well updated, but cannot take the live vaccines..I would hate to be stranded somewhere I definitely might not want to be just because I did not have the YF immunization. --Jean |
