The next year, I looked at the sign more closely. It was outside the
A. W. Jones Lumber Company again with the "Plastic and Smoke Free"
sign. When I looked at it with binoculars, underneath it said " No
plastic and no cigarettes allowed on this property. Our jobs depend
on it."

Having worked some lumber yard and/or lumber mill fires in my yout', I
can certainly understand how their jobs would depend on that. The
relationship with plastics is what fascinates me.

Where can people smoke inside buildings other than hotel rooms?

I don't know about smoking in hotel rooms. My grandson was quite
intrigued by the large warnings on cigarette packages.

We were in London the first week of June this year. I understand the
complete smoking ban in London went into effect the first of July. I
know that people smoked in 2002 when I was there, and since at that
time there was a ban on smoking in workplaces (except bars) in
Maryland (where I live), I was a little surprised at that.

I've had the perception that Europeans smoked much more than North
Americans - I was on a train going from German to Italy in 1964, and
the border/customs person asked me how many cigarettes I had, and when
I said I did not smoke, he really appeared not to believe me.

I live in MD also. Different states have different regulations. It's
easy to forget but we've been surprised to walk into restaurants in
other states and smoking is allowed.

Things have changed a lot since then. I was in high school and college
in that era. The high school senior lounge allowed smoking and so did
college classooms. ( I actually did go to high school and college in
the same place but I think it was representative of the times.)

And here I thought it was about a Cruise Line that was giving away
"Free Smokes".

All in all, remember it is only about bottom-line and nothing else.
It makes their life simpler to ban smoking as it makes the ship easier
to clean.

another good reason to ban it.....

Always all sorts of good reasons to ban things, well accept logic &
reason that is. It was easy for the Germans to just start with one
thing, and look how that got out of hand.

.....exactly, smokers are in the minority

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/itn/2007082...dba1618_1.html

The ban on smoking in pubs, clubs and offices appears to have had an
impact on cigarette sales, new figures have revealed.

Consumer research company AC Nielsen says sales are down nearly 7 per
cent.

Despite the fall it still means smokers bought over three billion
cigarettes during July.

It is expected that manufacturers will increase prices to keep profits
on track.

The smoking ban was introduced in England and Wales on July 1.

The fall in July follows the 6 to 8 per cent declines in cigarettes
seen after smoking bans were imposed in Ireland in 2004 and in
Scotland last spring.

The casino's in atlantic city are now charging an added cost if you
smoke in your room,$150.00 & up depending on how much cleaning they have
to do. I guess if you do not tip the maid enough she will say your room
reeks of smoke,so they then add the charge on your credit card after you
have already checked out.

Hurray for shreveport! I am sick and tired looking at Young Mens
underwear because their pants are falling down their butt. It is just
not a good thing... We have our Liberties but then we abuse many
liberties.. SO why don't they just walk around in their Underwear?
lets all walk around in our underwear! Never understood why someone
would want those Big old shorts isnt it uncomfy to have them falling
down like that?
Its not just about how you want to wear your clothes though its about
being semi decent.

George I am laughing though.... shame we need a law on the books for
this!

Sue jumping off the podium ( not the balcony!)

BTW - here in good old Shreveport, LA (that's Louisiana, not Los Angeles) -
the local politicos are considering passing a law making it illegal for
people to wear "sagging pants" that expose their underwear.http://tinyurl.com/yohlxn

Helmet laws. Seat belt laws. Smoking laws. Now laws about how someone
wears their pants.

Doesn't the government have better things to do?

I don't care for that look either, but as long as their "naughty bits" are
covered, why should it be against the law. Just a waste of lawmaker's and
potentially policemen's time.

The banners usually forget one thing, the tax revenue generated from
cigarettes was quite high in most countries. It will have to be
replaced with something else. In addition a lot of smokers
self-selected themselves out of long-term health care which in a lot
of places was also funded by said tax revenue.
