Default Europe Trip-Mid Aug

Hallo,

I'll be traveling throughout Europe mid August through late Sept. A
few of the stops include Spondon UK, Perstorp Sweden , Lanaken Belgium
and Budapest.

I've never been to any of these locales before, though I have traveled
throughout Europe pretty extensively (Spain, France, Andorra, Italy).

Does anyone have any thoughts on the above 4 sites? Budapest should
be a hoot from what I heard, but I don't have a clue about the first
3.

This is a wind up surely.

Who in their right mind wants to visit Budapest.

Didn't you go to Budapest last autumn?

Spondon is a suburb of Derby, a rather dull industrial city in the
north of England. However, it's located within easy driving distance
of some terrific wilderness areas in the Peak District and Derbyshire
Dales as well as quaint small towns like Matlock and historic sites
like Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. So, perhaps not a magnetic place in
itself but a good base.

Perstorp looks to me like it's not too far from Malmo, one of the more
interesting cities in Sweden - and actually that means Copenhagen,
which for my money is one of the loveliest small cities in Europe, is
easy too. The historic city of Helsingborg is also close by.

No idea about Lanaken, I'm afraid. The nearest big place, Maastricht,
struck me as unexciting.

In Budapest I strongly recommend the badly-named House of Terror if
you're interested in recent history.

I will be in Spondon on a Mon-Wed, flying into Manchester and driving
to Spondon. Will this most likely be fatal? I've budgeted 2 hours,
workable? Is there a train I could take?

apply, can it be done safely? Are there any trains?

I fly into Maastricht, but apparently it's only 10 mins from Lanaken
so I don't imagine I could get that lost.

I am planning on driving from Lanaken to Frankfurt, a 3 hour, cross
country trip. The flight is an hour and by the time I make it to and
from the airports I figure just drive. Are there trains available for
this leg?

In Budapest I strongly recommend the badly-named House of Terror if

Possibly. I'm there 3 days and I'm desparately trying to convince my
better half to meet me there and take a jaunt to Vienna. I hear it's
maybe a half hour away. Are you familar with the "speed trains"? If
so, do they run from Barcelona to Hungary?

Why would this "most likely be fatal?" It might be a bit challenging
if you're tired and not used to driving on the left-hand side in the UK,
but it shouldn't be too awful otherwise, depending on time of day and
weather and traffic conditions. The route from Manchester Airport is
pretty straightforward: south on the M6 until exit 15 (Clayton), then
eastbound on the A500 and A50 towards Derby and Spondon. If traffic
isn't too bad and you can maintain a decent speed, you might even do it
in less than two hours.

You can take trains from Manchester Airport to Spondon, but the service
isn't that convenient, with at least two changes and infrequent service
at some times of day.

Yes, and yes. But cheap it ain't. If you drive from CPH, you'll be
crossing the Oresund Bridge, and that means paying a not-insubstantial
toll. Driving time should be just a bit under two hours, combination
of freeway and highway driving. Train travel is possible, with one
change of trains along the way.

I fly into Maastricht, but apparently it's only 10 mins from Lanaken
so I don't imagine I could get that lost.

Lanaken is right across the border from Maastricht. Shouldn't be
tough at all.

I am planning on driving from Lanaken to Frankfurt, a 3 hour, cross
country trip. The flight is an hour and by the time I make it to and

There are trains from Maastrict to Frankfurt, but not direct, non-stop
services. You'll change at least once, and that's on the utterly
non-intuitive route via Utrecht. Some routes feature several changes,
which can be rather tiring.

Possibly. I'm there 3 days and I'm desparately trying to convince my
better half to meet me there and take a jaunt to Vienna. I hear it's
maybe a half hour away.

You might want to do something about that hearing. Vienna is more
than two hours from Budapest.

Are you familar with the "speed trains"? If
so, do they run from Barcelona to Hungary?

There is no direct high-speed train service from Barcelona to Budapest.
It's a very long and tiring voyage via train, with a minimum of three,
and as many as eight changes.

Excellent, see comments below.

Great, I'll take a car and try to remain on the right...errr... left
side of the road. I wonder what a cab would charge?

Sounds like the train might be the route to go. It's a company trip
and I'm not overly concerned about paying for transportation.

I fly into Maastricht, but apparently it's only 10 mins from Lanaken

It would be the largest amount of driving on the trip but I think I'm
up to it. I note from the map it would take me through "Nottingham",
is this the one and the same from Robin Hood?

Sounds like it's out of the question. She has a tolerance of no more
than 4 hours sitting at one time.

thanks for your help.

You note from the wrong map. Maastricht to Frankfurt goes nowhere near
Nottingham, England. The only time you'll be near Nottingham is when
you're in Spondon.

You sure you meant "Barcelona" and not "Vienna?"

Hint: Barcelona is in Spain. Vienna is in Austria.

Yes, I meant Barcelona, or more specifically Vilafranca.

You're right about Spondon/Nottingham.
