Default fish and chips in York and Hull

Our last visit to York was when my parents wre alive and lived in
Haxby and that was 16 years ago. We now have some friends going to
York. We have already told them the obvious must see things but we
would love to direct them to 2 restaurants in which we had some of the
best fish and chips ever.

One was a moderately upscale restaurant in downtown York. I believe I
remember it being on one of the streets which is closed to traffic but
I may be wrong.

The other one in Hull has a take out fish and chip shop on the ground
floor and the table service is on the second (or first as the locals
would say) floor. It is very near the old school and the street in
which they set up the merchandise barrows. Back then, for our money,
we thought that this restaurant had the best fish and chips we had
ever tasted.

We went to see my parents at least every other year and they always
asked us to take them to the shop in Hull. Unfortunately, Mom never
got to the one in downtown York. Dad took us there when we were over
for Mom''s funeral and he told me that they had always been planning
on trying it but never did. The fish and chips there were also
excellent but, by noe means, inexpensive.

One last thought. Not far from the restaurant in downtown York, there
was also a store famous for its meat pies. If anyone knows this
place, please share.

We want our friends to have the best experience they can in
Yorkshire. For out of town trips, we have already suggested Richmond,
Harrogate and Thirsk but I am opn to any and all suggestions.

It's at 97 Lower Petergate. Follow the queue of Japanese tourists to find
the
entrance. The pie shop is Scott's Butcher at number 81

There's a good F&C restaurant on the RH side of the A64 a few miles east
of
York.

Is that quite central, maybe called the Golden Star or similar? I
recall going to a chippie in Hull that sounds like the one you
describe about five or six years ago, and they probably were the best
chips I've ever had.

When I was a lad living in Hull, the Gainsborough fish restaurant was
the best in town. It was in the Old Town, however, that was 50 years
ago and much of that part has been flattened now!

Has it turned into an Indian restaurant?

Well the moorlands to the north are really beautiful, if they're into
scenic drives. The ruins of the monastery at Riveaux are nice.

Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to help us so far. I am excited that we can tell them about the fish and chip restaurant and the butchers in York. I also thought of sending them to Ripon as well as to Rivaux Abbey and Howard Castle. Even though Jill, my wife, loves the view of the Abbey ruins in Hull, I don't believe that the city itself is worth a side trip without the chip shop. I have already recommended the Railway Museum and the Minster in York proper.

BTW, I remember as a child in Berwick on Tweed taking newspapers to
the chip shop and getting a free helping of chips. At the time, I had
no idea how poor we were and, although my late parents would disagree,
I would not have traded any of my experiences for all of the money in
the world. In the course of my first 9 years of life, before we
sailed for America, we lived in West Hartlepool, Braidwood (in
Lanarkshire), Berwick on Tweed and Blackburn. Other than Berwick,
none of those places would place highly on the must see list and yet I
cherish every memory I have of every one of those cities/towns/
villages.
