This is in le Monde this evening.

http://www.lemonde.fr/

"Le déclin des mariages et le succès du pacs se confirment, les naissances
se stabilisent "

Pacs are quasi marriages between any two people, not only homosexuals,
which help people in a civil union so they can share some of the

advantages
married people have. They were most received with the problems which are
being encountered in American culture wars;

The other article was on the total deaths in France last year, 548,600

which
represented a jump of 15,400 deaths in comparison with 2002. The excess
deaths are attributed to the heat wave of August and the poor response of
the medical system to that emergency. There were 56,500 total deaths in
August of 2003, 41,400 in September and 44,000 in October. The winter
months of January-February may have 60,000 deaths because of respiratory
complications in the old and in fact in January of 2003 there was an
increase of deaths of 6,000 over normal due to the flu.

The 548,600 total is not a record year however, in the late 1940s there
was a 573,600 death year and another 573,300 deaths in the late 60s.
In the heat save year of 83, a total of 552,000 deaths were recorded.
In the `90 the total yearly deaths has fluctuated between 525,000 and
535,000. Generally the longevity has been increasing at 0.15 yrs per
year, this year the expentancy for women is 82.9 years and 75.8 for me.

Births remain high in France at 1.9 children per woman. Both Ireland
and France have Europe`s highest. We had 792,600 newcomes this year.
The French population stands at 61.7 million, more than the UK
(59.6 million) but less than Germany at 82.5. Most of the French
increase in population is internal and not due to immigration.

This is background material, I have posted this for years!

Background material allows tourists to not walk around in
a total fog. Except in Britain.
