Most pay phones have horrible rates and you might need a wheelbarrow to carry the quarters. I remember once calling a friend from a supermarket that was less than a mile from her house and having to pay more than dollar for the first three minutes. Prepaid phone cards give you a toll-free number to call, than you enter your customer code (found on a scratch-off strip on the back of the card, then you enter the phone number you want to reach.
