| I agree. Chichen Itza is better left for a land-based vacation from
| Merida, Cancun or even Cozumel. It still means an all-day trip and a
| long bus ride, but you get a very early start, and getting back to
| your hotel to crash at the end of this long day is better than knowing
| you must return to your ship for dinner and a full evening.

A land vacation will be in the near future, but as I said above, I want to
just get a taste of want I want to do on a land vacation.

I would most likely stay in several different hotels. I found on one of the
research sites I use (http://www.travelyucatan.com/) that there are hotels
at Chitzen itza (or at least very close) from $16-$43 USD. So an overnight
or 2 would not be a bad idea for us.

I like the Hotel Maison de Marques in Valladolid, about a 20 minute drive,
but I have also stayed at a nice hotel in Piste, although I cannot remember the
name of it. It was none of the ones on this web site.

It's much more do-able from Progresso. But you could also go to Uxmal from
progresso which is (IMHO) every bit as amazing, although in different ways
much more beautiful and far less crowded.


I am basically wanting to use the short cruise excursions to get a taste of
where I want to visit again on a land vacation. I know without a doubt that
I will want to return many times ;-)

There is much to see.

True, and Valladolid is usually only a rest stop on the bus trip to
Chichen Itza if you take the tours from Cancun. You just can't see
much of anything except that beautifully wrought-ironed encircled
zocalo.

The land vacation we took from Merida several years ago really gave us
a wonderful central location with which to see this interesting and
historical area of Mexico.

Merida is such a neat town. They have a wonderful Museum that ties together
a lot of the local sites (Uxmal, Chichen and many others) as well as a great
market, wonderful historic area, University with many folkloric shows, etc.
I could go on and on. We did Uxmal out of Merida, and spent several days
there on one trip, stayed in Valladolid and did the Rio Lagartos Flamingo
Sanctuary on another trip, not to mention getting to Coba, which is a fasc-
inating site, as it is closer to the beginning of being excavated.

Far and away the best idea is to take the Chitzen Itza tour when you go
to Progresso and maybe even have time for a quick look at the beautiful city
of Merida. Go to Tulum when you are in Cozumel as you will get a chance to
look at some countryside, villages, Playa Del Carman and still have time to
do some shopping in Cozumel itself. That gives you an idea of if this is the
type of place you wish to return to on a land vacation. We did just that
after sampling the area staying in PDC and it was a wonderful week.

| If you have never been to Tulum it is lovely and very doable in the time
you
| have from a ship's excursion. Not nearly as impressive as CI but in its
own way
| unique. I recommend that or an alternate. Come back to the Yucatan
some
time

In April of 2002 we booked a private plane trip to Chichen Itza while in
Cozumel.

We were very pleased with the trip and had no problem with getting back into
the ship in plenty of time.

If anyone wants information on this, let me know.

I'd love to have that information.

Wow, we took the plane trip to Chichen Itza in 2/27/01, it was wit
Aerosaab. Are they the ones who crashed? Any details? I was never so
terrified in my life, for me or my family!

NOTORIOUS for crashing due to mechanical failure. Some sort of design flaw.
It was like aviation Russian Roulette! Whew!

Unfortunately, there are no ship's excursions except by bus. If there is
another way to get there, it's with an outside source. If you have never
been there before and are into that sort of thing, I highly recommend it. Go
and climb the pyramid before they WISELY make it off limits for tourists. I
would ride the bus if I hadn't been there and it was the only way to go.

I'm guessing it was the same plane. What a tragedy. It was full of U of
Washington (or State?) Alumni on a group cruise. Have you tried googling for
info. Maybe under Washington or Wash State. Is there a NG for those schools.
Maybe someone remembers that terrible day.

I googled right after I posted and found it. Doesn't appear it was
aerosaab (who seems to still be in business offering flights to the
ruins, web site is easy to find). Nonetheless, I was pretty scared on
that flight and I don't scare easy (travel for a living). The plane was
small, just 4 passengers and the pilot/copilot. The one that went down
was a larger one. Bill
