Sorry, I just have to ask.

Having grown up in Toronto and been to or through Niagara Falls scores
of times I wonder about all the people who drive great distances, fly
from around the world, and "have to see it". I guess I am not so
impressed with the experience..

I would like to ask the people who spent a couple of days, rented
cars, took buses, trains etc. from say New York City, or altered their
travel route to include it...

Was it worth it?

Yes, without question, of course I saw it in Febuary
with masses of ice below the falls and very few tourists
around but it was VERY impressive.

It was worth ten minutes to stand there and look at the falls. Staying overnight
in the town was a waste of time.

Now Niagara on the Lake and various vineyards were well worth visiting.

So far . . . all you guys are "locals" too. I really want to hear
from those from; UK, Australia, Europe, Asia, etc... was NF worth the
long trip?.. For us it's a few minutes drive.

FWIW (from a Vancouverite), I was impressed with what I saw, but I only made
a brief stop on my way through Teranna on my way back up to Ottawa. I did
not have enough time to do the touristy stuff (and I was also on the trip
alone...). I enjoy great scenery. I will climb a mountain trail for hours
just to overlook a spectacular view for a few minutes.

I live in New York City and have never viewed Niagara Falls.
I would not mind the travel involved, but once there is there a
way to enjoy seeing the Falls and also avoiding the worst of the
tourist schlock that I understand permeates the area? What else
could one do there, for a day or two, that would be interesting
and not annoying? Where is the best place to book a room if this
is a concern?

To see the falls up close in their grandeur, you must sidle up to the
tourists. However, once you have viewed them (the precipice, on the Canadian
side is my favourite spot) and done the caves or the maid of the Mist, get
the hell out of both Niagara Falls schlock towns and get yourself to Niagara
on the Lake, Ontario, only a few miles away. It is the Canadian equivalent
of a quaint New England town.

Is it easy to find public transportation from the Falls to Niagara
on the Lake? Sounds good.

It's less than 15 miles downstream - your best bet would be a taxi.

I am not sure if there are buses, sorry.

There are busses. It's a beautiful drive on its own....and if you happen to
have a bicycle, I'd recommend riding the bike path down!! Used to roller
blade from the falls to NOTL....gorgeous!
On the way you cross Sir Adam Becks Dam....not sure if they have tours..but
it's still impressive.
The floral clock is neat and there is the butterfly conservatory too.

If you're a golfer, there is a top rated course just off the Niagara
parkway. I wish I remember the name of the top of my head....

Things to see other than the falls:
Old battle areas: Old Fort Erie; Fort Niagara (are at opposite ends of the
niagara river)
Casino haha
Niagara area winery's
Niagara On The Lake It's just a small village but it is nice! Time your
visit right and the Shaw festival may be running!
Welland Canal (not really all that impressive, but it's neat to see if you
haven't seen locks before)
Niagara Gorge hiking trails (few access points & think about fishing down
there too)
Niagara Whirlpool (there's a hiking trail near there so that you can walk
right down beside the whirlpool)
Helicoptor tours (take an aerial tour of the falls)
Spanish Aero Car tour (get in an old spanish car that carry's you over the
whirlpool/lower rapids)
Marineland (same as SeaWorld but with rides)
And golf courses that are everywhere!!

then there are all those things to do that directly relate to the falls
itself!

Which cave is that? Cave of the winds? It's gone long ago. But it's
namesake still lives on in an impressive walk. Maid of the Mist is fun
but you're packed like a sardine on the boats.

Journey behind the falls was ok. Only worthwhile part is the wood
platform at the base of the falls. Great view.

That tourist schlock is only a few blocks and is about a quarter mile from the
falls.

There is a taxi van shuttle that runs several times per day. Some of the DOuble
Decker tour buses go to NOTL too.

No the cave is sitll there...unless it's gone in the last year!
It's the Cave of mists or something!
You can get access to it from Table Rock (I think...been awhile!).
Basically you end up near an opening off to the side of the falls...but you
certainly get the thrill from all the mists flying in!

The cave really isn't all that far from the boardwalk. cave is closer...but
there's a barracade about 20ft before the opening. Oh well! lol

The Jet boat is the big thing now....it doesn't go up as far as the maid of
the mist but it certain is a better thrill ride!
