Default Entry requirements for london/UK?

What do I need to show/prove to simply land in gatwick and be on my marry way
to backpack around europe?

I'm Canadian and will be flying in from Toronto.

Should I have a travel VISA ahead of time? Do I have to have to show a return
ticket?

Proof of funds? If so what constitutes proof of funds? just a print out?
what if its a debit card?

I don't want to be denied entry simply because I don't know where I'm going
and don't know how long I'll be there.

While it's never happened to me (I've entered the UK without onward ticket
numerous times, and will continue to do so) I have seen other people turned
away.

Anything you have that helps corroborate your stated plan will make things
easier. Plane tickets to or within the continent, a eurailpass, etc.

At gatwick/heathrow immirgation you basically stream off into "British/EU"
and "Other". You'll be in the "Other" category. Everyone in "Other" gets
questioned to some degree; it basically depends on who you get. Take
evidence that you're not going to overstay in the UK (such as evidence of
commitments back home) and proof of funds, evidence of destination, etc.

One way of making things easier is to apply for an "entry clearance" at the
British embassy / consulate before you travel. If you have this then "you
will not be refused entry into the UK unless your material circumstances
have changed.". They'll still give you a hard time at immigration though :-)
I think they enjoy it.

I'm British and my wife is an "other" - she has all the visas and whatnot
but still gets questioned every time we go through immigration.

Got to justify those tax pounds somehow I guess.

You'll be fine with your Canadian passport...
