We've been to Jamaica several times and have always stayed at the adults
only all-inclusives. We are thinking of going to Jamaica 3/23(my husband
works for a major airline), since we can go on a non-stop flight from Dallas
to MBJ. Any recommendations for smaller (non AI) hotels in Mobay? Preferably
on or very near the beach, and near restaurants, nightlife etc. We thought
we'd try something different this time.

We liked Toby's Resort. Nice room with fridge.
Friendly staff.

It's just around the corner from Buccaneer Beach
and right at the start of the main strip.

Short walk to Doctors Cave, a little farther to downtown.

Toby's has its own restaurant & bar. Others are a short walk away.

Do a web search for Toby's Montego Bay and you'll get
lots of info and reviews.

If your husband works for a major airline, have you considered a package
deal air, hotel, and car? I'm sure your husband can get the package at a
discount.

I've looked into that in the past. Usually we get very little off the
packages. We fly free and a lot of hotels gives us a decent discount.
Although the way flights are booked up lately we may have to start buying
tickets! Standby travel is not what it used to be...
We may just do some small trips next week instead of heading to Jamaica.

My sister's a TA. She's advising people that even with small trips to
be sure to make guaranteed reservations. If you opt for Florida,
Hawaii, or Gulf States every spring breaker who doesn't own a passport
will be in these areas. My 91 yo father didn't heed this advice. He
thought he could just drive down to Ft. Myers and rent a condo. The
only things available are hotels where you wouldn't want to stay, or
ones that they don't want to pay the price for the room. Last night he
phoned from the Doubletree Suites in North Naples. To night having
exhausted most resorts on the West Coast, he called from some town north
of Orlando. He said he was hoping to get the last room in a mom & pop
motel in some backwater town.

Naturally, we tried everything to prevent him from making this fools
journey. But he was very determined to go to the West Coast. I had
pulled an ignition cable from his car, little did I know he had spare
ones stashed. He left before anyone was up.

So folks learn from his mistakes. For domestic travel to "someplace
warm" be sure to reserve well in advance of your travel. It might be a
good idea to use a TA. They have professional contracts with the major
resort hotels and can often dig up rooms when other resources fail.

We never just head somewhere without having a hotel reservation, years ago
maybe but not now. Because of the standby situation we do however wait till
the last minute to make the reservation in case the flights look really bad,
or weather acts up. I bought a fax machine a few years ago for this purpose,
to fax reservations and receive confirmation for last minute trips. We are
probably just going to visit some relatives in Nashville. And/or drive to
Austin, TX, which is an easy 3 hour trip.

If you are flying into Montego Bay, try this.

You could spend a fortune at Round Hill, but we were only staying the
four-day Thanksgiving weekend.
