Default Linderhof Palace: Füssen, Ettal, or München

Linderhof Place appears to be a beautiful palace to visit but I am
having trouble determining the best way to get there. Füssen seems
to be the town closest to Neuschwanstein Castle, but Ettal seems to
be the town closest to Linderhof Palace. I won't have a car, and DB
shows that taking a train/bus to Linderhof Palace from München or
Füssen will take a few hours with a few changes. Does anyone know
if a direct bus tour from München is an option? Or is this palace best
suited to be visited with a car?

Füssen is quite far away from Linderhof. There is a direct bus to
Linderhof castle leaving from Oberammergau, but it is a challenge
getting to Oberammergau.

It's indeed simplest to get there by car. Otherwise there are bus tours
lasting one day, which leave from Munich and bring you to Neuschwanstein
and Linderhof castles and the Wieskirche (Unesco world heritage baroque
church). These leave from Isartor and inn 2002 cost 12 Euro/person (but
I forgot the company name).

Aren't all three in one day a bit much?

Yes, I thought so. I prefer to visit Neuschwanstein on my own so
I can afford to actually look for more than a few seconds.

There's a good website for Linderhof
http://www.linderhof.de/

I found that, too. They did not mention any bus tours, but then again,
they really cannot assume where the traveler will be coming from.

Why is it a challenge? DB tells me that I can take a train from
München, connect at Murnau, and continue to Oberammergau. I
think you may just have solved my problem. The trains are all
RegionalBahns, but that means I can use a BayernTicket (thanks
Lennart!). Can you tell me more about this bus? Is it an obvious
tourist bus (obvious for an American)? Does it have a designation
or number on it?

Because you have to change a couple of times - but never mind.

(never took it myself however).

By the way, why don't you rent a car? It would everything less
complicated.

Thanks for the information.

Well, yes, but that would be much more expensive than using a
BayernTicket which only costs 15 euros per day. I have never
rented a car in Europe, but whenever I have rented a car in the USA,
it costs $50 or so per day when you add up the daily cost, gas, and
other itemized costs. I have a limited budget, but my time is free.

I've done the excursion to Linderhof from Munich by train and bus and it was
an easy one.
Just ordinary buses from Oberammergau, think it's no problem to find them
outside the station.
Think some of them continues to Füssen and Neuschwanstein so it may be
possible to do both.
However be prepared for long lines, sometimes hours of waiting, for the
castles.
Possibly Neuschwanstein could be seen from outside only.

What time of day were you there? I was thinking of arriving early in
the day to avoid crowds. I suspect that weekends are more crowded
than weekdays. Do you know when the German school year ends
and begins again?
