Thanks for the great trip report. Interesting to know how we are viewed by others.

My family and I did an 11-week trip through parts of the USA and Canada
between

late March and mid-June 2004. We had a wonderful trip to North America, one
that

we will remember fondly for many years. In the months of planning that went
into this trip,

we got many useful tips from this newsgroup and other sources.

Upon our return to Australia we put together a simple website, with photos
and comments

on our trip. URL is http://dominic.kelly.site.net.au This is my first
attempt at a website, so it is not the

most professional effort. I'm aware the pages look different with various
resolution settings and monitor sizes,

but hopefully not too bad for anybody. I know the many digital photos are
not top quality, but then again

we took so many that we did not have the space to save them at a higher
resolution.

The website has been created mainly for the benefit of our family and
friends, to allow them access to

the photos and various notes we made on our experiences in America.
However, we also thought that

our experiences may be of some use to fellow Australians (and others)
planning to travel to

North America. Comments welcome.

Thanks for visiting our country - we need the tourist dollars, and a
three month trip, that's some bucks, thanks again.

Your general observations about Americans was interesting to read. I'd
add that about 50% of Americans don't know their ass from a hole in the
ground - in fact they don't know much about anything (just look at who
got re-elected here, President Texas Trailer Trash). For example, it's
safe to say that about 95% of Americans don't know the name of
Australia's Prime Minister. Moreover, most don't even know who their
Congressman is or who their State Senators are.

Sean,

You get that all over. I don't know whether it's any worse or better in
the States,
but there are many Aussies who have no real idea what their State
government
is responsible for, as opposed to the Federal government. I'd wager that
a great
many would also have no idea who their local Member of Parliament
(equivalent to Congressman) is.

Without getting too partisan about it, I'd also say that many Aussies
would be none too pleased with the recent re-election of our conservative
Prime Minister, John Howard.

Cheers & Happy Thanksgiving

Dom

But, these sorts of remarks don't necessarily indicate majority situations as
much as they illustrate the sort of people one chooses to associate with. The
politically apathetic exist in every country. And there are many people who
are disinclined to discuss politics with foreigners because it gets too
bogged down in endless explanations. KM

Several years ago, Newsweek magazine wrote an extensive article on the
American education system. The article pointed out that 32% of
American high school seniors don't know where Washington D.C. is. The
students part of the magazine's survey were given an unmarked map of
the USA and asked to put an "X" in the location of the nations capital
- 32% were not even close, some even putting it on the West Coast!
I'd have to agree with Sean Miller, most Americans (AT LEAST half but
probably more) have absolutely no understanding/knowledge of:
geography, political systems, science, math, history, etc.
America is largely a country of idiots.

Lack of education doesn't make people stupid, it makes them misinformed or
ignorant. Your condemnation is of the educational systems, not of the
students. The teachers obviously aren't teaching. Not that I necessarily
believe anything presented by the elite media. KM

Thanks for taking the time to put that together. Sounds like you had a fun
trip.

Quite a stroke of luck that you managed to meet Clint Eastwood just a few
weeks after posing with his handprint in Hollywood!
