Default Australian Beer

I think it's important to anyone visiting this great land thhat they
make informed good choices on beers to try whilst in Australia.

So here's a shameless plug, check out http://www.brew.com.au
Australia's online beer reviewing community, and check out what beers
rate well, and what beers to avoid.

Cheers!

Thank you for that wonderful link to Aussie beer. However, I'm wondering
why they don't have a simple 'search' for beers rather than listing by
manufacturer. What if one doesn't know Carlton Cold is made by Fosters?
And who makes VB? Anybody know? It might not be one of the 'best', but
by God on a hot day in Bendigo it sure hit the spot.

Having lived here for a year I can safely say there's no such thing as a
good Australian ale.

The closest has to be Coopers Vintage - a nice tipple, or Coopers Dark which
closely resembles a Porter Ale as found in the UK. Failing either of these,
Coopers Draught will do. The rest are ****e.

I'm not too much of a fan of Coopers either. Compared to Youngs Special or
Tanglefoot or any other English ale, the Coopers wouldn't even get onto the
podium.

Fosters is the crap beer, never been able to understand why they push that
on unsuspecting furriners

Ah the perils of langauge - beer = lager - Ale = beer - beer = beer

Ale and Lager are two completely different styles of "beer",
different methods of storing and serving. Try room temperature
lager for a refreshing drink (spit, puke, choke).

Lager type beers (fizzy from CO2, served chilled, made from lots
of chemicals) have the market by the balls in Aus.

Ale on the other hand is almost exclusively the domain of the
home brew specialist in Aus, although some dark lagers do have
a stronger taste/flavour - Tooheys Old and Coopers
comes to mind. Guiness made by Fosters is available but if
you've ever had Irish Guiness then its a disappointment.

Theres a few boutique brewers around who brew and sell
in the pub - there is / was one on Racecourse Road in
Melbourne.

I can't ever remember seeing a beer engine on a bar in
Aus.

Err, mate, you're supposed to keep it in the fridge, not the
cupboard.

Of all the drivel posted on usenet, discussions on the
relative merits of beer rank just behind US politics and all
forms of religion as the most prolific and the least
intelligent.

Drink good wine instead.

Or do you also prefer British wine?

Cheers, Alan, Australia

Amazing that Fosters is known for a piddling beer when it's got some
nice stuff on its shelves.

Having just viewed their web page, I was surprised that not only do they
handle lots of varieties of Carlton (Cold became a favourite) as well as
VB but also Kilkenny Ale, which we enjoyed on draught at that Irish pub
down the road from Subiaco waiting for the Eagles to get the season
started with Port Adelaide a season ago. Also they export some wonderful
stuff like the Belgian beers Leff and Stella Artois.
