Probably not true. They tax boats that are there for extended
periods. Probably the same with cars.

You are mistaken, my fine feathered friend.
... http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/property/exemptions.html
"Some items of personal property are not taxable, for example,
licensed motor vehicles, boats, airplanes, trailers, trailer coaches,
and certain mobile homes as defined by law."
... Section 1, Article VII, Florida Constitution:
"(b) Motor vehicles, boats, airplanes, trailers, trailer coaches and
mobile homes, as defined by law, shall be subject to a license tax
for their operation in the amounts and for the purposes prescribed
by law, but shall not be subject to ad valorem taxes."

And those license fees probably cover the ad valorem taxes also. Been lots
of stories of people staying on their boats over the 30 days or some set
amount of time and getting the bill for registration. Makes sense. Same as
most other states. If it was possible to do as you say, everyone would be
registering their vehicles in cheap states.

Correction:

You would be required to register it in Florida ~only if~ the
owner either becomes employed, places children in public
school, or establishes residency in this State.

fla no longer has a personal tangible property tax

How much is car registration in Florida. California, part of the fees are
the value tax.

Gawd, you should quit while you're behind.
The annunal registration fees here range from $27 to $47, depending
on the vehicle's weight. The theory is that the heavier the vehicle, the
more wear on the roads. It has nothing to do with value, as that is
expressly prohibited by the Florida Constitution.

As for "people staying on their boats," I do not recall the OP saying
that he was going to live in his car. It a little different. Could a boat
be interpreted as a "residence?" Florida has plenty of experience
with folks using their boats as residences. As for the bills, marinas
collect rent and remit the sales tax to DOR offices. It doesn't take
rocket science to track boats from marina to marina and figure out
who is residing versus who is chartering a boat for a fishing trip.

Any problems around licensing (Canada or US?) insurance, customs\duties,
storage preparation under the car port?

Thank you in advance.

I've been following this thread off and on, but I don't believe anyone
has addressed the customs/ duties part, only state requirements.
Leaving an imported car in a foreign country may have customs/duties
implications. Check with a U.S. consulate.

The one-time $100 charge is in addition to the annual tag fees.
BUT... If the transfer of registration is due to a sale, a new title
fee and sales tax of 6% will also be collected.

There doesn't have to be a sale for it to kick in. Just moving into
the state. And there are additional titling fees.

.... and Canadian Customs, it is their responsibility to prove the vehicle is
free of any liens before it is even allowed to go to the US for an
'extended' period. If the vehicle does have a lien, taking to vehicle out of
the country for an 'extended' period may be prohibited without seeking
permission from the lender.

Hi Bill,

Have you ever used a snowbird driveaway service? Many snowbirds have
their car driven to and from Florida so they can just fly down and
back as you wish to do. We will pick you car up right at your door
and pick you up at your airport of arrival. Can we be of service?
Best of the holiday season everyone!

My parents are snowbirds and left a canadian car in FL for years.
Just remember you still have to renew your Canadian license plates and
ownerships as well as insurance.
