Default Question about "cheap" airline tickets

I've heard that there are a number of organizations that sell airline
tickets cheaply. Is there some consumer-oriented website that rates the
cheap-ticket organizations? Can these relatively inexpensive airline
tickets be bought at the last minute or within the week before travel,
or do they require advance purchase of two or three weeks? Is it
necessary to pay to join the cheap-ticket groups? Where can I go to
learn more about these organizations? Thanks.

You can buy last minute vacations that include cheap airline tickets.
Often cheaper than the ticket itself. For a group or these websites
visit www.livinginstyleonline.com. Click on the travel bar on the home
page.

Hi, Han and Ida. Thanks for your replies. What about organizations like
Orbitz, CheapTickets.com and Expedia? Have you ever used them?

I've used them all.

Orbitz is the best of the bunch (at least of those you mentioned); you
basically get what you pay for and the prices are usually good. Sometimes
you can get the same thing cheaper on the airline's own site.

Expedia is a little more cumbersome and overall offers less competitive
prices, so there's no compelling reason to use it.

Cheaptickets borders on disreputable and I'd avoid them if at all possible.
These days their prices aren't good enough to be tempting anyway.

Orbitz is simple enough to serve the only-marginally-enabled, and provides a
good place to start, providing clues of what to look for at individual
airline sites and providing some "feel" for trips combining a couple of
carriers.

If you want to get a general feel for airfares, go to this useful site, you
can enter your particulars and you'll get fares from the major carriers
(Southwest and some other discount carriers are not included in this site;
you can check international fares here too):
