Default Flying to Zurich, best place to get Swiss francs, Euros ???

I'll be flying from Chicago O'Hare to Zurich, staying few days,
driving into southern Germany for visits to relatives, and then
driving back and leaving for the USA from Zurich. All in 10 days.
Wha'ts the best/cheapest way to get Swiss Francs and Euros?

Your credit card in an ATM.
You won't get much with your feeble $ though...

Don't use your credit card and some others have suggested. Use your
bank ATM card. Be sure to find a bank that won't charge you an arm
and a leg to use the ATM card on off network machines. I have an
account with Schwab bank and they don't charge any fees for using any
bank ATM machine.

Yeah many credit unions and brokerages will refund any ATM fees.

There are also credit cards which charge no or lower currency conversion
fees than others.

For instance, Schwab just launched a Visa card which promises no
currency conversion fees plus 2% unlimited cash back credited back to a
Schwab brokerage account.

Best usually is ATMs - several available at the
airport - just check with your bank for the conditions
(exchange-rate and/or charges).

In addition, at least Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS)
and Credit-Suisse (CS) have currency exchange
counters at Zurich airport (next to arrival, but also
departure area and shopping center one deck below
car rental desks - or one deck above airport railway).

Major and border railway-stations in Switzerland
and airport railway stations (Zurich and Geneva)
also provide currency-exchange services. Rates
were best (comparted to banks and post offices)
some years ago - might have changed since.

Outside the airport, you can find ATM not only at
bank subsidiares, but also many post offices
(postfinance). Most ATMs in Switzerland provide
CHF and Euro - check for information on the ATM

In border area, shops usually accept both CHF and
Euro - but will accept or return coins only in national
currency.

More interesting when shopping in Germany might
be VAT return (19% now) for non EU-residents.
Check for procedure if you plan buying more than
just a few cheap products you want to bring back
home.

Have fun ....

The last time I went to Zurich I got my cash from an ATM machine in the
Zurich train station. I used a credit card to buy my train ticket at the
airport. If you are staying in Zurich proper I hope you do plan to take the
train.

Don www.donwiss.com (e-mail link at home page bottom).

I am checking with my two credit card companies today to see which
have the lowest fees for overseas transactions, I will use whichever
one is best for charging expenses and for getting cash from ATM
machines. Been there several times, just didn't know if there was
anything new. Thanx to all responders.
