For really cheap "hearty" eating, try a Pie and Mash shop.

Don't forget Fish and chip shops!

Try this site-

http://www.knowhere.co.uk/

It is a site all about skateboarding BUT also there is a mine of
LOCAL information about cheap places to eat, pubs, cafes all written by the
young people that actually live in the town. Just put in the town you are
visiting in the search facility and loads of inside information will be
yours.

Its pretty accurate about my own home town.

Just as an aside I hate to say this but the cheapest places I find
to eat in London are all the well-known fast food burger type places.

Good luck.

That's about $12 (US).

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to have a substantial dinner for
$10 (US) or less in London?

"supermarket restaurant"...???

New concept to me... do you mean like the three plastic booths that sit
near the Super-K-Mart 'deli' counter here in the US, or something less
hard scrabble in England?

Yes, in an ordinary pub or a department store restaurant, or a
supermarket restaurant.
