Take you ATM debit card and withdraw euro. Why? because it is the currency
of Greece and because debit cards are the best easiest and least bulky way
to get money.

Hadn't thought of that! How widespread are ATMs in Crete? Are there any
transaction or conversion charges?

the charges for ATMs are always less than the extortionate rates one
pays to cash traveler's cheques

With most banks yes, however Nationwide Flex Account does not charge any
fees itself though the machine provider may do so.
