OP said he's going to Fairfax. Flying is probably bad advice -- we take Amtrak
to and from NYC all the time, as it's much more cost efficient.

The regular Amtrak is the way to go. The more expensive trains typically save
you only 15 minutes or so. Depending on exactly where you're going in Fairfax
County (or Fairfax City), you could take the train to either Union Station in D
C
or to Alexandria, VA. You can then complete your trip by either subway (Metro)
or cab.

Tell us exactly where in Fairfax you're going and we'll advise in more detail.

Thanks to all of you for all your great advice and suggestions.
You guys are great! We're going to Fairfax (the city).
Our motel is in Fair Lakes which I guess is just part of Fairfax.

What is an economical hotel in NYC that we could stay at?
We just need a clean non-smoking room with two beds and, of course,
a clean bath and shower. A mid-town location would be best.
Has anyone stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel on 45th Street?
Were you happy with it?

Also, what price do lunch and dinner entries start at in NYC?
What is the ballpark minimum I should expect to spend
for a dinner for two?

Thanks again.

if that's the case it would probably be faster and less expensive to
fly into dulles

Ever wait for checked baggage at Dulles? Or endure the Dulles "Washington Flyer"
monopoly taxi system? It's a miserable experience, slower than almost any other
travel imaginable.

We flew in last Saturday night. Thank dog we had cleared US customs in
Vancouver, or we'd probably still be at Dulles airport.
