Default ? Passport for Cancun, Mexico

We plan go to Cancun next year, do we need the passport? If we go there in
August, do we need to buy insurance due to hurricane season?

Thanks

Hai

If you are an American citizen, you only need your birth certificate...and I
wouldn't go there in August...insurance or no. HOT! I think October is
high season for hurricanes, anyway.

Hai,

If you are a U.S. citizen born in the USA, all you "need" to get into Mexico
as a tourist is an embossed birth certificate and a government issued photo
id such as a drivers license.

That said, your trip will be much easier if you have passports, with at
least 6 months of validity, for every member in your party. Your airline and
US immigration are more likely to scrutinize your papers than are the
Mexican authorities.

Do you need insurance? That's up to you. But be aware that the Yucatan is
affected by storms originating in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Medical and
medical evacuation insurance can be a nice thing to have as well.

I returned from Cancun less than two weeks ago and I was glad I had my
passport and insurance, and especially glad I never had to use the latter.

A raised seal birth certificate and a Photo ID will get you in if you don't
have a passport and it's always a good idea to purchase travel insurance,
hurricane season or not.

Have Fun.

Why anyone would travel, even next door, without a current passport baffles
me. In today's neurotic world of 'homeland security' etc. a passport (or
two) is an essential. As is any form of cancellation insurance. Who knows
which airline or resort, or agency will go belly up next.
