Tsessebe antelopes (judged by their horns - but I never
heard this name before) look like what I know as Kuhantilope
(Haratebeest, Kongoni, Alcelaphus buselaphus). Topi is
Leierantilope, Damaliscus lunatus.

Hello,

I think there is a small mistake in two of the four Tsessebe pictures.
The two which have only the annotation "Tau - Tsessebe" are in my
opinion not Tsessebe but Red Hartebeest, Alcelaphus buselaphus, in
German Kuhantilope. Their horns go straight up, whereas the Tsessebe
horns are more curved outside (Tsessebe = Damaliscus lunatus, in German
Leierantilope or Halbmondantilope).

I do not know their relation to the East African species.

Manfred

Inge, Manfred,

thanks for the good information! The antelopes in the photos
were dark brown, while the east African (Coke's) hartebeest is
light brown (see

http://www.michna.com/kenya2004/images/p1040629.jpg, both out of
http://www.michna.com/kenya2004/, approximately in the middle).

The topi looks like this (see

http://www.michna.com/kenya2003/images/p1020667.jpg, and here's
your topi at sunset:

topis: http://www.michna.com/kenya2003/images/p1020750.jpg,

Thanks for the info - the animals in those pictures do look different from
the others. I was told Tsessebe are quite common in Madikwe and that there
are Red Hartebeeste but they are rarely seen.
I'll check further and amend the descriptions.

(I have already sent this message once, but it hasn't appeared - sorry if it
eventually appears twice)

Cheers

Michael
