Helsinki or Gothenburg?
I have a possibility to work for a company for a while and I can choose
either Helsinki or Gothenburg as the work location. For someone single, male, Anglophone, no Swedish or Finnish language skills, based on cost of living, culture, welcome, interest, proximity, location, climate, etc, which do you think? Any and all opinions welcomed. TIA |

For someone single, male, Anglophone, no Swedish or Finnish language skills, Doubt that this makes a difference. based on cost of living, Both are going to be relatively expensive, you have to pay the "getting it there" tax. The problem with Sweden is finding somewhere to rent. There is a cronic shortage of property. Apparently there isn't enough land and they're not making any more of it :-) No idea if Finland is any easier. culture, welcome, interest, proximity, location, My colleagues reckon that Gothborg is the best place to live in Sweden, representing the best compromise between things to do and cost of accomodation. climate, etc, I would guess that Gothborg is the best of the two. which do you think? Any and all opinions welcomed. TIA |

Hi
not sure about the Goteborg climate. True, it is a "so called" warm water port. But there can be some pretty big lumps of ice coming down the river ! And they do escape the very low temperatures. Problem is that the Gulf Stream can deliver weeks of grey days in winter. And temperatures do go down to the -20's C. Maybe Helsinki, whilst colder, may have brighter days ? Peter |

Having checked: Helsinki is 6 degrees colder in the winter, 2 degrees colder in summer. Goteborg gets 10-20mm more rain each month. Helsinki is light for an hour longer in the summer...... .....so it is dark for an hour longer in the winter. Maybe Helsinki, whilst colder, may have brighter days ? dunno tim |
