Where should I spend October 3?
OK, I'm going to Germany on Sept 29 or 30, and I'll be there on October 3rd.
So where should I spend October 3? I need to be in Dresden bright and early October 4th, so probably prefer the East side of the country. Basically flew in to Prague and after a few days, took the train to Dresden (about 2 hours) and after a day in Dresden, took the train again from Dresden to Berlin. I then flew back from Berlin. I would recommend both Berlin and Prague. The only problem is I'm not sure what how early you want to be in Dresden on Oct 4th because the train schedule to Dresden from Berlin or Prague may preclude this option. |

Unfortunately, my schedule just could not accomodate it but Leipzig could be another option for you. I'm sure that city is worth at least a day. |

And if I remember correctly, Leipzig was critical in the move for German Unity. So it might be a very good choice, as would Berlin. I'm not sure there is a compelling reason to be in Prague on German Unity Day, but I might go another weekend. I've heard good things about the place. -- Julie ********** Check out the blog of my 9 week Germany adventure at www.blurty.com/users/jholm Check out my Travel Pages (non-commercial) at http://www.dragonsholm.org/travel.htm |

Is this based on your having been there or are you guessing? IMHO the only thing of interest in Leipzig is the new shopping centre in the railway station. tim |

Julie ------------ Just be sure you've reservations as the weekend around October 3 is real popular among Germans for an excursion ,not at least to Berlin |

Hey Julie, I would definitely spend 3 October in Berlin. They always throw the biggest party (with fireworks and bands around the Brandenburg gate) in Germany on that day, because it's the capital. You could catch a train to Dresden the next morning, it won't take too long to get there. Let me look for the link for the train schedule - I'll post it here in a bit. Party on! Isn't the Nickolaikirche, where the Unification movement was born in 1989 still there? And the Thomaskirche, where Bach was choir master? -- Julie ********** Check out the blog of my 9 week Germany adventure at www.blurty.com/users/jholm Check out my Travel Pages (non-commercial) at http://www.dragonsholm.org/travel.htm |

Thanks, Julie. Berlin was where I was thinking of. I still need to figure
out what the constraints are with my class. the Goethe Insitut may expect me to sign in early, but I could sign in the day before then go to Berlin. As soon as I know I'll try to make hostel reservations. Julie Julie wrote: Hey Julie, I would definitely spend 3 October in Berlin.
