Texas, Zavala County Beware -- Out of State License Plate
Beware of travel to Zavala, Zavalla County, or La Pryor, Texas.
The police there are targetting out of state license plate vehicles with tickets for minor offenses. Here is a partial list of what you can get: Fail to Dim Headlights $150 Seat Belt Violations $200 Crossing Median $150 Defective Headlight $150 Defective Tailight $150 Window tint $150 How else can they see your seat belt if you tint your windows? Unsafe Turn $200 More... If you live far away, how can you plead your case? Are you going to return for a couple hundred dollars? And you'd have to return twice to appeal to the out of county judge. The trooper J. Balderas (and others) and the judge know they can legally get you to spend your money in Zavala County. They are a team. It's their word against yours. Beware of travel to this part of Texas. You can't possibly be a perfect driver for the duration of this county. This part of Texas is not worth the cost. Don't travel to La Pryor Texas, Zavalla County, Zavala County, Batesville, or Crystal City, West Texas. Thanks to all in the group, and good luck to you in your recreational travels. |

Thanks to all in the group, and good luck to you in your recreational travels. Thanks very much for the warning and sorry to hear about your bad experience. This sort of thing used to be widespread in rural and small-town America--most notoriously in the south--but the worst abuses seem to have moderated somewhat with the development of the Eisenhower highways. There must have been a good reason why you couldn't take the 35 road? Oh, and by the way--that isn't 'West Texas'. cheers, Henry |

The police there are targetting out of state license plate vehicles with tickets for minor offenses. They don't target only out of state plates. I got caught in one in north TX and I have a TX plate. In my case the speed limit dropped from 70 to 50 in a distance of about 50 to 75 feet. Unless one know it us coming it is hard to slow down that fast. Typically the speed limit gradually drops over a much longer distance giving one time to coast to a slower speed. Likewise the citation instructions had several minor infractions listed with high fines. There is a web site www.speedtrap.org that you might check before you travel and perhaps relate your own experience. New Mexico is terrible for speed traps. |

That keeps small places from financing their entire budget from the fines. FFM |

In any case the territory described in the original post is "La Raza" country and the basic violation may be 'driving while white'. --- Bob |
