Default Crete

Have any of you "enjoyed" a Cretan Night while in Heraklion? My travel
agent says it is a night out with food specialities and wine included
for 36 E. I would like to taste the specialities of Crete but this
sounds like a typical tourist thing.
thanks in advance,
Carolyn

Yeh, it does. Avoid those like the plague. Ye Gods, for 36E in Crete, you
can eat and drink like a King independently. Just need to chat around the
locals to find a good genuine place.
(But I wouldn't look for it in Heraklion! Try Rethymno or Chana).

I am told by devotees of the package holiday to Greece that a 'Greek' or in
your case 'Cretan' night is always included as an optional extra. Apparently
it usually consists of an indifferent meal with the waiters dancing
afterwards, with a lot of bouzouki bashing, plate smashing and other forced
jollities.

A lucrative rip-off - I would avoid it like the plague.

Last month, for less than 36 Euro, I was buying dinner for two in nice
restaurant, in Duesseldorf, during a trade show, when prices always go up.
In Crete, I would expect restaurant prices to be noticably lower, so it does
not seem to be very good value. Wander around the place a bit and look for
where the locals are eating. You are far more likely to find genuine local
specialities and for much better prices.

A very good dinner for two in Crete last year, with copious wine and brandy,
would have been about 20E.
