Default tax question

On the way out of OAK yesterday, I paid tax on a newspaper at a
newsstand. I thought that tax was included on newspapers. Can anyone
fill me in on the correct policy?

Default tax question

The newstand will charge tax on any purchase...........the only time
you don't pay tax on newspaper is when you buy them from the newspaper
vending machine.

You do pay tax from the vending machine. The paper has been discounted
by the amount of the sales tax, then the tax has been added back on.

Some stores sell newspapers for well under the MSRP (i.e. Walgreen's)
but they do charge tax.

That's right. Whether the tax shows or not, the state is going to get their
cut any way possible.

Some states have a minimum price, below which tax is not charged.
