Saudi Arabia opens its doors to tourists
Dave Smith wrote: eetinBelgië wrote: Saudi Arabia hopes to attract a million visitors a year with the help of a new tourism visa. Eighteen approved tour operators in the kingdom have begun offering visa services as part of a series of tourism initiatives announced last week at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. The Saudi government is also to begin issuing permits for tour guides from next month. I bet that people will be lining up to go to a country that has previously barred tourists and keeps foreign workers in housing compounds partly for their own safety and partly to stop them from polluting Saudis with their infidel beliefs. That's not true for cities like Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. While I was there I could freely roam anywhere I wanted to. Not that there was much to see there, though. J. |

A good chunk of them have enough cash and assets to allow them not to work for a dozen generations or so, they just need to change their Bentleys every two years instead of 6 months. Those who don't are already working. In a not particularly hard way, but working anyway. J. |

Only an extremely small percentage of them are wealthy. That is a common western misconception. An extremely small percentage are extremely wealthy, a good other percentage are simply wealthy and most people are upper-middle class by western standards. Those having a hard time in the KSA are, for the most part, foreign workers in near slavery conditions and foreign students trying to become muslim clerics. Those are the ones bringing the per capita figures down. J. |
