Goa beaches turning into mortuary for tourists

Press Trust of India
Thursday, October 9, 2003

Panaji, October 9 - Seven tourists have been killed in
rough seas in the last two days at Goa's Calangute and
Colva beaches, police said.

Imtiaz Ahmad, a 31-year-old medical representative from
Hubli, in Goa to attend a conference, was swept away by
strong currents on Tuesday when he ventured into the sea
for a swim.

Local fishermen tried to rescue him, but he was declared
dead on admission at the primary health centre, Candolim.

Also on Tuesday, three students and their teacher, on a
study tour from Tamil Nadu, drowned at Colva in south Goa
on Tuesday, police said.

Three persons of a group of 20 youth from Bangalore on a
picnic to Goa were hit by a large wave and pulled into
the sea on Wednesday, Calangute police told PTI here
today.

While one was rescued and discharged after first aid, two
met a watery grave. Their names were given as Ayyara (25)
and Ravi Kumar (26), police added.
