We are considering the possiblity of a transatlantic cruise in November.
The two choices are the Brilliance of the Sea or the Regatta, one of the
Oceania Cruise ships. Any suggestions either way? I'm kind of leaning
towards the Regatta since it leaves Lisbon on Wed, Nov 3rd. This will give
us the opportunity to get there a few days eary and explore the city. The
Brilliance departs Barcelona on Monday the 1st, which won't allow us to
really do any sightseeing. I hate to spend all this $ and not visit a
European city, if even for a few days.

Thanks - I appreciate all the advice.

(....... or----- we could be responsible homeowners and replace our
windows--- nah - we've lived here 7 years - another year won't hurt!)

99 time out of 100, I'd say Regatta. Simply a higher end product.

However....

A crossing is something different.

Regatta is a PRETTY small ship. I'd rather be on something bigger when
crossing the "pond", particularly in the winter... A) From a larger ship
being a bit more stable in the ocean perspective, and B) from the
perspective of having more things to do on a bigger ship.

I booked the Brilliance sailing from BCN. If time is a consideration, fly
from the US on Saturday, Arrive Sunday Morning and have a day and a half in
Barcelona. It is a beautiful city featuring La Ramblas prominade, the works
of Antonio Gaudi, and the last cathedral still under construction in Europe.
Then you get a day in Alacante and a day in Malaga and the ability to sail
through the straits of Gibraltar. Yea, that's the one I chose. Look us up
on the cruise critic boards under roll calls....

They are both excellent ships, but different. I suspect that the
Brilliance might be a better choice on a crossing. More to do, larger
and potentially more stable if you run into some rough conditions and
she is beautiful.

The Regatta, on the other hand, will offer a more upscale experience. I
wrote a thorough review of the Regatta, as did Raoul at his site.
Whatever you decide, have a great cruise

I haven't been on the Regatta, but I have been on the Brilliance and
several other RCI transatlantics, and I can tell you that the Brilliance
is a GORGEOUS ship and RCI provides wonderful varied entertainment
during the crossing.

I love Barcelona, but you can get a pretty good taste of it in a day or
two. There's a wonderful tourist bus that takes you all around the city
for a low price, allowing you to get on and off as much as you like. If
you'd like to sample some excellent food, try Las Caricoles.

It's bigger than the Mayflower! Really these days, all these ships have
stabilizers....I'd rather be on the smaller ship for the more intimate
feel of the trip, less crowded, better food, etc. Stability is not
likely to be a big issue actually.

Jeff -- who himself is considering the other Oceania ship for the Nov.
13th transatlantic from Lisbon to St. Thomas.
