Peculiar credit card request
"pdamiant" wrote in message ... "John.Stolz" wrote in message ... In the end I was forced to use AMEX (which was inconvenient for all sorts of reasons) Really? AMEX is by far the best credit card for travelers. What could be inconvenient about it? Amex is by far the worst for travellers, especially if you are in europe, italy has good coverage and the uk isnt bad either, apart from the they are ****, visa and mastercard are the preferred card for a traveling wilbury I travel through Europe regularly and have found that Amex is an excellent card to use. Some merchants and cheaper restaurants don't accept it, but otherwise it is taken in a surprisingly large number of places. Amex' superior customer service, e.g. replacing lost cards overnight, make it a very desireable card for travelers. In addition to Italy and the UK, I've used the card without incident in the Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria and Monaco. -- Posted via http://britishexpats.com |

I have both Amex and Mastercard, typcally using the Amex for business expenses and the Mastercard for private purchases The classicAMEX cards is a charge card rather than a credit card and has no fixed spending limit which is rather useful travelling on business. AMEX also have excellent world wide replcament services. I got a card replaced over the counter at the AMEX branch in Rome, my Mastercard took a couple of weeks to come through. Keith |

Even the merchants that take it, prefer that you use something else, but the bigger problem is that a lot of stores and restaurants don't accept Amex due to the higher transaction fees. I have an Amex, but only because it's the only card accepted at Costco. Costco negotiated some sort of sweetheart deal with Amex, after Discover decided to change its cash rebate policy for warehouse stores. |

As far as the number of places any single card is accepted, Visa seems to be the winner by a mile, er, kilometer.
