I've never spent a lot of time in NY state ( other than Niagara Falls on my
way to the west). I'd like to take a 7 ? day drive ... enjoy the scenery,
find some nice places in the Adirondacks, Lake George area etc and looking
for advice, links on where to stay, what to do. Looking for nature related
and historic, or scenic drives - no mountain climbing ! Next week , next
month is good.
I'm just starting to research and found this:
http://www.americandrivingvacations....nymontage.html
We'll be leaving from Boston, MA area so (skipping the NYC visit) could go
RT 84 then thru Nyack then UP to start. Or Rt 90 . Then on return thru
VT/NH to get home. Or reverse. Looking for advice on weather also. Too early
now - wait until ... ? Are the vacation area places open for rent yet /soon
? Stay in a motel ? or "stay at this hotel" ? Also appreciate any little
restaurants to get ... breakfast... or whatever their specialty is.
Thanks

State parks, at the moment, are being held hostage to "the most
dysfunctional legislature in the country"[1].

However:
Hudson Valley
- FDR library and historic site, right next to Vanderbilt Mansion and
Mills Mansion (Mills Mansion is a state facility...)
- Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate; has Nelson Rockefeller's modern
sculpture collection
- Dia Beacon - modern art museum
- Culinary Institute of America - gourmet meals, decent prices
- Martin van Buren (National) Historic site in Kinderhook
- Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College
Also in this area, if you like modern architecture, is the Philip
Johnson "Glass House", just over the border in Connecticut

Saratoga Springs
- Horse racing in August (but see [1])
- Saratoga Performing Arts Center (universally known as SPAC) all
summer: popular concerts, ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra
- Ballet museum, (horse) racing museum
- Near Lake George - mountain lake w/ beaches, Lake George Opera
Festival
- Near Glens Falls: Hyde Collection (art museum)
- Fort Ticonderoga; this summer is 250th anniversary of the French and
Indian War, and there will be a lot of reenactments and such.
http://www.fiw250.org/, http://www.fortlapresentation.net/

The Berkshires
- I know that they're in Massachusetts, but an hour's drive from the
Albany area; Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, Williamstown Theatre Festival,
Mass MoCA, Clark Art Institute...

Adirondacks
- Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake
- Wild Center in Tupper Lake (http://wildcenter.org/)
- Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg (just north of the
Adirondacks)
- Seaway - locks and dams, generally around Massena, NY

Mohawk Valley (west from Albany on I-90)
- Arkell Museum in Canajoharie, recently opened
http://www.arkellmuseum.org/
- Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota
- Cooperstown - Baseball Hall of Fame, Farmers Museum, Glimmerglass
Opera
- Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta

Western NY:
- Rochester: George Eastman House, Strong Museum (toys)
- Buffalo: several Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, Roycroft Inn (inn
associated with former Arts&Crafts/Craftsman colony)
- Niagara: casinos, tourist traps

I've been to the Ausable Chasm http://www.ausablechasm.com a couple
of times over the years. It's a commercial tourist attraction,
but not horribly touristy. On the "classic tour" you walk one-way
through a scenic gorge, then ride a raft (first time I went it was
a boat, so your feet could stay dry) through some mild rapids; then
you leave the gorge and they give you a lift back to the starting
point unless you prefer a walking trail.

Thanks for the ideas folks, keep 'em coming. AND when mentioning an
attraction, if you could mention how much time to allot - so I can plan on
howmuch in a day / how long a trip.
Thank you.

A couple of days in the Adirondacks would be nice. Stay off the
interstates. If the weather is good, any of the highways that go
through the park area, such as 86 and 73, will be very scenic. The
Adirondack Loj is at the trailhead of many hikes, but it's also a
scenic location to get you far from the highway. Their food was very
good when I camped there a few years ago. http://www.adk.org/ad_loj/index.aspx

The Thousand Islands area is completely different, and again worth
visiting. I don't know how nice towns on the US side such as Alexadra
Bay ("A Bay") are, but if you like historic Brockville is a very nice
town from the early 1800s. Oh, and it's an "United Empire Loyalist"
town so although many of the founders came from the post-Revolution
US, you'll see lots of British Empire monarchy stuff and style. I'd
recommend crossing at Ivy Lea and looping via the Thousand Islands
Parkway from Gananoque in the west to Brockville in the east. If
Canadian history interests you, continue east to Morrisburg where to
Upper Canada Village http://www.uppercanadavillage.com/home.htm By
the way, stay on (ex) Highway 2 for a scenic drive; use the 401 only
if you are in a hurry.

Of course you now need a passport to cross the border, and who knows
what the CAD/USD exchange rate will be this summer.
